Maximum retry count exceeded

Teams has tried to sign in too many times without success. The client waits until a reset happens.

Symptoms

  • Sign-in fails with CAA50021
  • Teams hangs on the login screen
  • The same error appears immediately after clicking Sign in

Possible causes

  • A wrong password was retried automatically multiple times
  • Conditional Access is blocking your device
  • Proxy or firewall blocks login.microsoftonline.com

Solutions

1.Check network and endpoints

  1. Make sure your network can reach login.microsoftonline.com.

  2. Disable VPN temporarily and retry the sign-in.

2.Remove cached credentials in Windows

  1. Open Credential Manager.

  2. Delete all Microsoft entries.

  3. Restart the PC and sign in to Teams again.

3.Verify the account in a browser

  1. Open https://office.com in private mode.

  2. If web sign-in works there, it is a client issue. Clear the Teams cache.

CAA50021 does not mean your account is locked. The client just hit a local protection. After clearing the cache and signing in fresh the issue is almost always resolved.
