Meeting recording fails

You click 'Record' and the recording does not start, or it stops mid-meeting. Here is how to find the cause.

Quick fixes

  • Check if you are 'Organizer'
  • Is there enough OneDrive or SharePoint storage?
  • Is recording enabled in the tenant policy?

Who can record?

By default only organizers and co-organizers can record a meeting. If the record button is missing, that is usually the role.

Fix: ask the organizer to make you a co-organizer or set the role in the meeting options.

Check storage

Recordings go to OneDrive (1:1 meetings) or SharePoint (channel meetings). If the tenant hits the storage limit, recording fails.

Open https://www.office.com/launch/onedrive and check free quota.

Tenant policy

Some organizations disable recording entirely or limit it to certain groups. If you cannot record even as organizer, that is almost certainly the cause.

Ask IT to show you the ‘Teams Recording Policy’.

Recording stops mid-meeting

Common cause: the meeting runs longer than 4 hours (limit per recording) or the recorder has unstable internet. The recording lands in OneDrive anyway, just shorter than expected.

Stream vs OneDrive

Older tenants still store in Microsoft Stream. If your tenant is being migrated, there can be transition issues. Ask IT whether the Stream to OneDrive migration is complete.
