Fresh sign-in required

Microsoft Entra requires a full new sign-in because important account properties changed since the last login.

Symptoms

  • AADSTS50173 in Teams or in browser sign-in
  • Other Microsoft apps require the same new sign-in
  • Appears after a password change or MFA reset

Possible causes

  • Password recently changed
  • MFA methods were reset
  • Admin revoked all user sessions
  • A security event forced a re-sign-in

Solutions

1.Re-connect the account in Teams

  1. Click your profile picture in the top right of Teams.

  2. Choose 'Sign out'.

  3. Reopen Teams and sign in with password and MFA from scratch.

2.Reset Windows credentials

  1. Open Credential Manager.

  2. Delete every entry that starts with Microsoft.

  3. Restart Teams.

3.Verify in a browser

  1. Open https://office.com in private mode and sign in.

  2. If that works, the Teams cache is just stale - clear it.

AADSTS50173 is not really an error - it is a deliberate request for a fresh sign-in. A single sign-out and sign-in resolves it.
