File upload fails in Teams
Files do not upload or get stuck at one percent. Usually file size, file name, or OneDrive quota is to blame.
Affected systems
Quick fixes
- Check the file size - limit is 250 GB per file
- Remove special characters from the file name
- Check OneDrive storage
Invalid characters in the file name
SharePoint and OneDrive forbid these characters in file names:
" * : < > ? / \ |
Double dots and control characters also cause issues. Rename and retry.
Path too long
The full path including folder hierarchy must not exceed 400 characters. For deeply nested folders, copy into a flatter folder first.
OneDrive quota
Every tenant has a OneDrive limit (typically 1 TB per user). When your storage is full, all uploads fail.
Check free quota at https://www.office.com/launch/onedrive and clean up if needed.
Antivirus blocking
Some antivirus tools scan uploads and can interrupt streams. If uploads from desktop always fail but work in the browser, this is a hint.
Very large files
Even though the limit is 250 GB, browser uploads above 100 GB often fail due to browser memory. For very large files use the OneDrive sync client instead.
